In an era where digital threats are as real as physical ones, Columbus City Utilities (CCU) is taking a proactive stance to protect our community’s most vital resource. We are pleased to announce that CCU has officially joined the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Water Sector Initiatives.
By enrolling in this federal program, CCU now receives continuous, automated vulnerability scanning of our digital infrastructure. This “shield” helps us identify and patch potential security gaps before they can be exploited by outside actors.
“Our commitment to the residents of Columbus goes beyond providing clean water,” says Roger Kelso, Executive Director of CCU. “It’s about ensuring the systems that deliver that water are resilient against modern threats. By using these federal tools at no additional cost to our ratepayers, we are maximizing our security while remaining fiscally responsible.”
This initiative is a key part of our 2026 safety goals, ensuring that the water and wastewater services you rely on every day remain safe, steady, and secure.
About the Program
The CISA Water Sector Initiative is a federal program designed to support critical infrastructure providers. CCU is specifically utilizing the Vulnerability Scanning Service, which provides:
- Weekly Reports: Detailed analysis of our internet-facing systems.
- Threat Intelligence: Real-time alerts regarding global threats targeting water utilities.
- Expert Support: Access to federal cybersecurity professionals for system hardening.
A Proactive Approach to Utility Management
Under the leadership of Executive Director Roger Kelso, CCU continues to prioritize “Security by Design.” By leveraging these federal assets, CCU strengthens its eligibility for future State and Local Cybersecurity Grants (SLCGP) and ensures compliance with the latest industry standards for critical infrastructure.
“The safety of our community’s water supply is our highest priority,” Kelso stated. “This partnership allows us to stay ahead of emerging threats using the best tools available, ensuring uninterrupted service for all Columbus residents.”
